2010 ROGER SABON Secret Des Sabon Chateauneuf Du Pape
Long regarded as a reference point for this magnificent appellation of world renown, Roger Sabon is a great source of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the expression of fruit and terroir is everything and oak is treated with caution. Sabon makes wines of concentration, flesh and finesse utilising 70 year old foudrés for elevage and second use barriques.
Sabon’s Châteauneuf’s typically benefit from medium term cellaring, from four years for the ‘Olivets’ up to ten years for the ‘Prestige’ and ‘Secret’.
In exceptional vintages such as 2001, 2003 and 2004, Sabon produces the exclusive and expensive ‘Le Secret Des Sabon’ which is a hedonistic and extraordinary wine, not to mention very rare; less than 1000 bottles were produced.
“One of the irrefutable reference point estates of Châteauneuf du Pape for traditionally made wines. There are four cuvées of Châteauneuf du Pape produced, although admittedly the 150 or so cases of the Le Secret de Sabon are virtually impossible to find, which is rather sad given that it is one of the greatest wines produced in the world. The 2004s are a success at Sabon, and my instincts suggest they are probably superior to the 2003s and the best vintage Sabon has turned out since 1998 and 2001.” Robert Parker Jnr.
“Proprietor Jean-Jacques Sabon and the other younger family members are taking these wines to even greater quality heights than previously attained. The new vintages possess updated, more polished labels, but more importantly, the wines continue to go from what were very strong efforts in the past, to even deeper concentration, complexity and depth. All four cuvees are now routinely outstanding, with the top two offerings, the Cuvee Prestige and the limited production Le Secret des Sabon, compelling Chateauneufs. As with many estates, the 2007s exhibit the vintage’s succulent, juicy, incredibly pure fruit and tremendous freshness and vivacity, all packed into substantial, full-bodied wines with surprisingly high alcohols given their vibrancy. One might expect such greatness in 2007 in Châteauneuf du Pape, but the Sabon’s have also hit the heights in the excellent 2006 vintage.” Robert Parker Jnr.

If you can find any of the 150 or so cases made, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon represents the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape, perhaps the essence of wine. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a fabulous, intricate nose of blue, black and red fruits, graphite, chocolate, charcoal, forest floor, spring flowers and a touch of garrigue. Unbelievably concentrated, to the point of being viscous and nearly over the top, the wine is sensationally rich and pure with a nearly endless finish. There is plenty of tannin, but it is largely obscured by the luxuriousness of the wine’s high glycerin and intense fruit. Forget this beauty for 3-5 years and drink it over the following three decades or more. This is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape although it is impossible to say it is better than some of the previous blockbusters made at Domaine Roger Sabon, including the 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007 Secret des Sabon. Very tight, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, cherry and currant preserves all coiled at the core, framed by details of black tea, bergamot and anise. The finish picks up a sleek iron note to accompany the perfumy edge. Very long despite the backwards profile. Should be a stunner with age. Best from 2017 through 2035. (Web-2013)
