Majorie Gallet purchased her small domaine in 2001 at the ripe old age of 23. She renamed the estate Roc des Anges (angel’s rock) in honor of the white, quartz-veined soil. The farm is about 18 miles from the vibrant, French-Catalan city of Perpignan on the southwest coast of France.

Ms. Gallet grew up near Côte Rôtie in the Northern Rhône, doing apprenticeships with Yves Cuilleron and Pierre Gaillard, and studied eonology in Montpellier before setting off on her own. She farms roughly 50 acres of vineyards spread out over 43 different parcels in this dry, stony landscape. All the farming is organic.

Llum is a blend of Grenache Gris and Maccabeu, grown in eleven small parcels of 70 to 100 year-old vines. In the glass, the wine has a limpid, saturated lemon yellow color with flashes of pale green and bright gold. There is a fleeting suggestion of hyacinth under the ripe green apples and Asian pears, along with fresh cut grass, chamomile, and crystallized honey on the nose. On the palate, the wine is vinous and full-bodied, with gorgeous flavors that echo and magnify the beautiful floral nose, all seasoned with satisfying saline minerality. This is another wonderful achievement, grown by a sensitive young woman who is grateful for her vineyards’ modest gift of seventeen hectoliters per hectare (only a glass and a half from each of these gnarled old vines).
