Producer note: Antoine Jobard described 2016 as having “one of those nightmarish growing seasons that you hope to only see once in your career. The morning of April 27 was clear, cold and still and when the sun rose most of the incipient vegetation in the lower level vineyards didn’t stand a chance and were burnt to a crisp. My losses were highly disparate though as they ranged from fully 90% in some to basically untouched in others though on average I lost 50% of a normal crop. May and June really weren’t any better as there was so much rain along with clement temperatures that the mildew caused us a huge amount of grief. Worse, the vineyards were so wet that we couldn’t get tractors in them for fear of injuring either ourselves or the vines so it was manual spraying for most of the period. Thankfully around July 14 the weather cleared up and became sunny and dry and this allowed the vines to finally enjoy an uninterrupted growth spurt. I began picking on the 22nd of September and brought in ripe and clean fruit with potential alcohols that ran between 12.2 and 13.2% with good if not high acidities. I used zero new barrels as I feel the style of 2016 is one of finesse, even delicacy. In fact stylistically, I would describe it as being a blend of 2007 and 2013.” Additionally, Jobard noted that the now in-bottle 2015s, reviewed below, were put there between March and May 2017. Tasting note: A more typically styled nose is comprised by notes of hazelnut, brown butter, white orchard fruit and a whiff of acacia. There is once again excellent richness to the full-bodied and caressing flavors that terminate in a lush, even opulent finish that despite all of the sap remains refined. Lovely.
