Producer note: Jean-Marc Joblot who, along with his brother and daughter Juliette, directs this 14 ha domaine where the plantings are divided between 11 ha in pinot noir and 3 ha in chardonnay. Juliette Joblot described 2015 as a “vintage that was quite hot but it was particularly hot at the harvest which complicated matters as it was necessary to pick quickly. We chose to begin harvesting on the 29th of August and brought in extremely clean and ripe fruit that required essentially no sorting. Maturities were excellent without being over the top with potential alcohols in pinot of 13 to 13.4%. Moreover with the thick skins densities were also first-rate. There was though almost no malic acid yet because there was a healthy level of tartaric the wines are definitely not flabby or soft. In terms of the wines while they’re certainly ripe they still aren’t as ripe as either 2005 or 2009.” Joblot noted that for the 2015s they chose to reduce the amount of new wood by 10% which means that it’s now around 50% rather than 60%. As the scores and commentaries suggest, Joblot has once again turned in remarkable quality and several of the wines are worth your attention. Tasting note: A discreet touch of wood can be found here as well though it’s sufficiently subtle to easily allow the fresh and ripe mix of red berries, spice, earth and floral elements to shine. The ripeness carries over to the velvety, rich and once again utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the firm, serious and less rustic finish. Worth considering.
