Producer note: Thierry Matrot, who joined his father Pierre at the domaine in 1976 and essentially took over in 1983, is now himself turning over the reins of the domaine to two of his daughters (he has three), Elsa and Adèle; they joined the domaine in 2008 and 2010, respectively. It was with them that I did the tasting this year and they noted that 2016 “wasn’t the easiest of growing seasons but after 2012, 2013 and 2014, not much fazes us anymore. With that said, it was still terrible to see such widespread damage in the course of one morning as the frost cost us around 60% of a normal crop and as much as 90% for the regional wines. We chose to begin picking on the 20th of September and the maturities were not only good but very good and the fruit was basically spotless. Moreover, the low yields and thick skins actually gave us better solid to liquid ratios than we obtained in 2015. Overall, 2016 is a quality vintage and in both colors.” The Matrot sisters told me that the 2016 whites were bottled between August and November 2017. Note that the Pierre Matrot label is no longer used outside of Europe and that there is no St. Aubin “1er” Fleurs de Côteaux in 2016. Tasting note: A fresh, ripe and attractively layered nose is composed by a combination of various white orchard fruit, especially white peach, and citrus, floral and softer wood influence. I very much like the classy mouth feel of the refined medium-bodied flavors that dance across the palate while delivering fine length on the balanced finish. This does need to develop better depth but the material and structure is here for that to happen.
