Producer note: Vincent Mongeard describes 2013 as a “tough vintage that didn’t give us the cleanest harvest that I have ever seen or, for that matter, ideal maturities yet for all of that the wines are surprisingly good. Not surprisingly the fruit was fragile and required an enormous amount of sorting, particularly those parcels that we farm organically. Quantities were notably lower than in 2012, which itself was notably lower than a normal crop. Because the maturities weren’t as high as usual the wines required some chaptalization and I used much less whole cluster in the fermentations. The malos were extremely long and what I found interesting was just how much the wines transformed between the period before and after they finished. Before they were skinny and harsh and afterwards it was as though a switch had been flipped because they fleshed out and became much, much more harmonious.” As I explained last year, 2011 was the last vintage for the old vines Echézeaux because the parcel that has been historically used to produce it was donated to the Hospices de Beaune by its owner (this parcel had been leased by Mongeard). It has been replaced by a cuvée called La Grande Complication and I provide the details in the review below. (Atherton Wine Imports, www.awiwine.com, Atherton, CA, M.S. Tasting note: An overtly floral nose combines notes of Asian tea, black cherry, plum and sandalwood. There is good volume and plenty of muscle to the large-scaled flavors that possess good minerality and vibrancy, all wrapped in an impressively long and well-balanced finale. This is not especially complex at present though the underlying material is certainly present to allow it to develop more over the course of the next decade plus.
